#THISFILLYCAN campaign to support fillies and mares

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and the British Horseracing Authority have recently launched the #thisfillycan campaign to promote the benefits of buying, owning and training fillies and mares on the Flat.

This is something Rae has long advocated and had considerable success with - in fact around 90% of Rae's 27 Black Type winners have been with fillies.

The launch of the campaign follows an extensive review undertaken by the BHA to better understand the profile of fillies in training, the race opportunities available to them and their ability to compete with colts over the last decade.

Highlights of the review included:

  • - About 700 Flat races are now programmed exclusively for fillies, 40% more than 10 years ago.
  • - The median prize fund available in fillies’ races was above that of open races in each of the last 10 years.
  • - Once rated 75, the average filly earns more prize money each season than the average colt. Below 75, both sexes earn a similar amount.
  • - More fillies are winning black type and yet their median handicap rating remains constant at about 98.
  • - The quality of fillies in training has improved, with 650 more fillies rated 85 and above than 10 years ago, an increase of 58% (versus 39% for colts).

This is a positive step in increasing people’s interest in having fillies in training and raising awareness of the many benefits that can come from doing so.

Jane's Memory storms to Listed success

The yard's only four-year-old, Jane's Memory, showed that class will out when storming to success in this afternoon's Listed Cecil Frail Stakes over 6f - a trip she was stepping up to for the first time in her racing career.

Under a perfectly timed ride from Richard Kingscote, she was kept in behind the leaders for the early stages of the race before making a move to take up the running at the furlong marker, after which she stayed on strongly to claim the rewards.

The good-looking daughter of Captain Rio showed plenty of potential at two, placing in both Listed and Group 3 company, before unfortunate circumstances resulted in her being sidelined from the racecourse at throughout her three-year-old season.

She made her racecourse return earlier this month after over eighteen months off the track and has obviously benefited from the outing to fulfill the potential she had shown earlier in her career; we hope it will be onwards and upwards from here for this promising filly!

Congratulations go to the owner, Mr Padraic O'Neill, and Charlotte who looks after her at home.

Final share available in Syndicate

We still have one 25% share remaining in our most recently formed syndicate - the three exciting fillies, pictured enjoying some free time out in the paddocks this week, are (L-R) by Canford Cliffs, Dandy Man and Kyllachy - more details on the fillies involved can be found on the Horses for Sale page.

Rae is very pleased with all three; they are nicely bred fillies and are progressing well in their training.

The basic form of the syndicate is four partners, three horses and a fixed fee per month (£10,000 + VAT buy-in per 25% share, plus £1,500 per month per 25% share). These 25% shares can be split further between owners if this is something you and some friends would like to get involved in together and form a quarter share.

This format allows owners to spread the risk of ownership between a number of horses and to share the fun of racehorse ownership with a group of like-minded partners.

This is something we have undertaken previously at the yard and have found it to be a great success – colours, names etc. are all still to be decided, so owners have the chance to get involved in every aspect of racehorse ownership.

AHT Charity Race 2016

Budding jockeys are preparing to fly past the winning post of one of the most iconic racetracks in the UK to raise funds for the Newmarket based veterinary charity, the Animal Health Trust. Three Jockeys in contention for the title on 25th June are Elizabeth Evans, Hetta Stevens and Verity MacMahon.

Hetta previously worked at Chestnut Tree Stables as Rae's Assistant and Verity has ridden out for the yard on a number of occasions - so the yard already has links to two of the three announced riders.

Of course, we wish all those taking part the best of luck and importantly hope that as much money as possible is raised for this deserving cause.

It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these enthusiastic (and brave!) riders, battling it out over one mile of the Newmarket July Course, cheered on by the crowds in the AHT Gala Day grandstand.

Click here to watch them in action at The British Racing School!

Charlotte Clayton makes racecourse debut

Charlotte Clayton makes her racecourse debut today aboard one of the yard's most recent additions, Opera Buff, in the TTS Networks Apprentice Handicap Stakes (Class 6) at Lingfield (17:35).

This first ride for Charlotte looked unlikely earlier in the year, however with the support of Rae (and many others) she was granted her Apprentice Licence in March and her dream of riding professionally took one step closer to becoming reality.

Charlotte has the full support of the yard and we all wish her the best of luck!
